Support Your Practice with RIRO Resilience Training

Reaching IN… Reaching OUT (RIRO) is a nationally recognized, evidence-based resilience skills training program developed in Canada for adults who work with young children. It was created by a team of psychologists, researchers, and early childhood professionals to help adults build the emotional and cognitive skills needed to manage stress, model resilience, and support the development of resilience in children.

When educators feel confident in their ability to manage stress, respond calmly, and support children’s emotional growth, everyone benefits — from the children in their care to the families they serve.

RIRO isn’t just professional development — it’s a long-term investment in the strength and stability of yourself and your program.

RIRO Helps You:

  • Build emotional resilience and reduce burnout
  • Strengthen relationships with children and parents
  • Improve behaviour guidance strategies
  • Foster a reflective, professional mindset
  • Feel more connected and capable in their roles

Why choose RIRO facilitated by ADSN?

RIRO (Reaching IN… Reaching OUT) is a powerful program on its own, but taking it through ADSN makes the experience especially impactful for dayhome educators. Here’s why:

Tailored for Dayhomes
While RIRO is designed for all early childhood professionals, ADSN delivers the training through the lens of dayhome work. That means every example, discussion, and reflection is grounded in real dayhome situations — from managing mixed-age groups and long solo days to navigating parent relationships and emotional exhaustion.

Facilitated by a Dayhome Professional
Danielle Bourdin is a certified RIRO facilitator and the Executive Director of ADSN. Drawing from her time as a dayhome educator and her ongoing work with providers across Alberta, Danielle brings a deep understanding of the unique realities dayhome professionals face and delivers RIRO in a way that feels practical, relevant, and genuinely connected to the work educators do every day.

What Your Educators Will Learn:
Over the 6-week RIRO program, you will build a toolbox of resilience skills you can use for yourself and with the children in your care. The learning is split into two powerful parts.

Adult Skills (Weeks 1 - 3)

Child Skills (Weeks 3-6)

Program Delivery:
RIRO is delivered live over Zoom in a small-group format that’s flexible, interactive, and designed with dayhome life in mind. Evening sessions make it easy for educators to attend after hours without added stress.

Length: 6 Weeks
Schedule: 2.5 hours per week, in the evening
Location: Online via Zoom
Group Size: Maximum 15 educators per cohort

Expectations:
This is a live, interactive program that relies heavily on group engagement. To get the most out of RIRO, participants are expected to:

  • Attend all 6 sessions in full
  • Come prepared to reflect, share, and learn
  • Keep cameras on whenever possible to support group connection
  • Respect the confidentiality and experiences of others in the cohort
  • Complete light between-session reflections (no formal homework)

Choosing If RIRO Is Right For You:
RIRO is most impactful when participants are engaged, willing to reflect, and contribute to a supportive and respectful learning environment.

It is recommended that educators:

  • Are comfortable using Zoom and all its features
  • Can navigate group learning and follow reflective dialogue delivered in English
  • Have access to a reliable internet connection, a quiet space, and a device with a microphone and webcam

PD Funding:
RIRO by ADSN is fully approved for PD Funding and 15 Hours of Release Time. To be eligible for PD Funding, each educator must attend ALL 6 sessions. It is not always possible for ADSN to make up missed sessions for educators. Please ensure all participating educators can commit to attending the entire series. Educators will receive a certificate for both Child Skills and Adult Skills.

Cost:
The cost for this program is $200. A deposit of $100 is required to confirm your spot.

Private Providers (Special Offer):
Through funding that we receive from the Government of Alberta, the program cost for private providers is reduced to $100.
The first five private providers to confirm will have this $100 reimbursed after program completion, making their net cost $0.

Registered Providers:
Full program cost is $200.
The remaining $100 balance is due before Week 4.
After completion, registered providers may submit their RIRO certificates for full reimbursement of the $200 program fee plus 15 hours of release time through Alberta Child Care Grant Funding.

FAQ

RIRO is a 12 hr resiliency skills training that includes rich group discussion and information sharing.

This is not a typical ADSN PD where cameras can be off and you are permitted to sit in and listen.

If you apply to be considered for RIRO Training, please understand that there is an expectation that cameras are on and participants are engaging in discussion and share their experiences as appropriate and when comfortable.

RIRO becomes more powerful when we create a safe and welcoming environment where participants feel comfortable to share with one another.

Because space is limited to 15 participants, we may not be able to accommodate all those who apply. If you are not selected, we will keep your information on file and reach out to you when the next round of RIRO is being offered.

Yes! A certificate will be available for those who attend all 6 sessions live.

No, sorry! This course requires active discussion and participation that you would not be able to do with a replay. Please check your calendar and confirm that you can attend all 6 sessions.

We have submitted a request for both PD Funding and 15 hours of Release Time. Stay tuned!

Unfortunately, ADSN is unable to accommodate those who miss any sessions of the RIRO program. It is extremely important that you are able to attend each of the sessions. Failure to complete 1 or more sessions means we cannot offer you a certificate of completion and you will be unable to receive reimbursement for the program cost.

RIRO is a program developed by Wellington County in Ontario. You can learn more here.
