Description
ABC and Beyond™ helps early childhood educators intentionally build literacy learning into the interactions and experiences already happening throughout the day.
Rather than turning early literacy into formal academic instruction, the program focuses on creating natural, engaging opportunities for children to develop important emergent literacy skills through conversations, play and shared book reading.
The strategies are designed to support all preschool-aged children, including children who are typically developing, children with language delays and children who are learning more than one language.
Through ABC and Beyond™, educators learn strategies to support:
- Oral language
- Vocabulary
- Story comprehension
- Language of learning
- Print knowledge
- Phonological awareness
These skills have been identified as important foundations for later reading, writing and academic success.

ABC and Beyond™ is highly practical and designed to help educators take what they learn and apply it directly within their own early childhood environments.
Participants will explore real-life examples, discuss strategies and consider how everyday interactions and book reading can become richer opportunities for literacy learning.

ABC and Beyond™ is a research-based Hanen program developed specifically for early childhood educators working with children ages 3–5.
The program recognizes that some of the most powerful opportunities for early literacy development happen during ordinary moments — talking together, exploring children’s ideas, introducing new vocabulary and sharing books.
Educators learn how to be intentional about these moments while keeping interactions responsive, child-centred and enjoyable.
The goal isn’t to turn your dayhome into a classroom.
It’s to help you recognize and make the most of the literacy opportunities that are already happening throughout your day.
Individualized Video Coaching
ABC and Beyond™ goes beyond traditional professional development by giving educators an opportunity to reflect on their own interactions with children.
Participants will record a short video of themselves interacting with a child or small group and receive individualized feedback from the Program Leader.
This personalized coaching helps you recognize the strategies you’re already using effectively and identify practical ways to strengthen the literacy-rich interactions happening naturally in your dayhome.
