Understanding Concussions: What Every Dayhome Provider Should Know

As dayhome providers, safety is part of everything we do. Despite our best efforts, accidents happen, and sometimes, those incidents result in a concussion.

This year, Safe Kids Week (June 2–8, 2025) focuses on #KidsAndConcussions. It’s a reminder that with the right information, we can prevent injuries and respond confidently when they happen.

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of brain injury that happens when the brain moves quickly inside the skull. This can happen after a blow to the head, but also from a fall, a bump to the body, or anything that causes the brain to jolt.

A child doesn’t have to hit their head directly or lose consciousness to have a concussion.

Signs and symptoms to watch for:

In children, concussion symptoms can be subtle. You may notice:

🔸 Mood or behaviour changes (cranky, withdrawn, emotional)
🔸 Unusual tiredness or sluggishness
🔸 Balance or coordination issues
🔸 Trouble speaking or understanding
🔸 Headaches, nausea, or vomiting

If you suspect a concussion:
⚠️ Stop the activity
📞 Inform the family
👩‍⚕️ Seek medical attention as needed

Recovery has changed:

We now know that sitting in a dark room for days is not the best approach. Updated recovery guidelines recommend:

✅ Brief rest (24–48 hours)
✅ Gradual return to light activity
✅ Avoiding high-risk play
✅ Support from a healthcare provider

How to help prevent concussions:

You can’t prevent every fall, but you can reduce risk by:

🟢 Using soft surfaces in play areas
🟢 Supervising climbing and active play
🟢 Securing heavy furniture
🟢 Encouraging proper helmet use
🟢 Watching for environmental hazards
