FIRST-AID in dayhome settings
The Importance of First-Aid
Proper first aid training is a must-have for every child care provider, whether you’re licensed or running privately. In this section we’ll go over some important aspects of first aid that specifically apply to dayhome settings. From minor injuries to more serious incidents, being prepared and equipped with first aid knowledge can make a significant difference in ensuring the safety and well-being of the children in your care.
Choosing a Reputable First-Aid Trainer
When it comes to obtaining proper first-aid training, choosing a reputable first-aid trainer is essential. Many companies offer first-aid training services, but not all are created equally. When choosing a first-aid trainer, it’s important to ensure that the Alberta Government recognizes and approves their courses. In Alberta, the most prominent first-aid trainers are Red Cross and St. John’s Ambulance. You can take courses directly through these organizations, or, you can find a first-aid trainer that facilitates the Red Cross or St. John’s Ambulance courses. For a full listing of approved first-aid trainers, you can check out the Government of Alberta website.

Course Type for Dayhome Settings
You might wonder which first-aid course you should take as a dayhome provider. For many years, first-aid trainers offered a child-care-specific first-aid course with a short portion that spoke directly about childhood illnesses and caring for children. While this is an excellent course if available, it’s becoming less common in the first-aid industry. Instead, most first-aid trainers are starting to offer only Standard First Aid and CPR/AED C. This course covers all of the essential aspects first-aid and will give you the skills and knowledge required to handle emergencies within your dayhome program.
Group First-Aid Training
Big Hearts offers regular first-aid training in Edmonton, Calgary and Grande Prairie, however if you live outside of these areas you can still take part in first-aid training through Big Hearts so that you can enjoy your exclusive ADSN discount. With a minimum group of 5 participants, Big Hearts can facilitate a private group first-aid session in your area. Send us an email to inquire on group first-aid training in your area.
Self Paced First Aid Refresher
As part of our partnership with Little Lungs First Aid Inc., ADSN hosts a self-paced refresher course on Baby & Child CPR and Choking inside the Learning Corner. While this pre-recorded video course is not a substitute for recognized first-aid training, it is a great course to visit each year for an excellent refresher on choking skills and CPR. This course teaches you how to respond to infant/child choking and cardiac events effectively.
You’ll receive a certificate of completion after participating in this course.

Making First-Aid a Priority
First aid training should be a top priority for you as a dayhome provider due to the critical role you play in the safety and well-being of the children in your care. Accidents and emergencies can occur at any time, and being prepared with first aid skills ensures that you can respond swiftly and effectively. Whether it’s addressing minor injuries or handling more serious incidents, first aid training equips you with the knowledge and confidence to take immediate action, potentially preventing further harm and saving lives. Additionally, first aid training demonstrates your commitment to professionalism and your dedication to creating a safe environment for the children. By prioritizing first aid training, you gain the trust and confidence of parents, knowing that their children are in capable hands.
